TBA21-Academy’s eco art’s new home in Venetian church

This is a story about a church that is directly next door to the AirB’n’B that we stayed in went we visited the Biennale last year. Can’t wait to check it out when we go back!!!

The Austrian collector and patron Francesca von Habsburg has announced plans to set up a new base for her TBA21-Academy in a Venetian church. The new centre, named Ocean Space, is due to open next summer and will be housed in the newly restored church of San Lorenzo. TBA21-Academy, founded in 2011, is the ecologically minded offshoot of Von Habsburg’s contemporary art foundation TBA21 (Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary).

Asked if the space is permanent, a TBA21-Academy spokeswoman says: “Ocean Space will be a new cultural centre providing a long-term physical presence in Venice for the nomadic Academy and will be activated throughout the year by the Academy and partner organisations with whom it collaborates.” The Ocean Space inaugural programme is due to be announced.

  • KunstHuis – “Our eARTh” Exhibition

    KunstHuis – “Our eARTh” Exhibition

Very happy to have been selected to show a piece of my Encoded Artwork in this show which is running from march to December in 2018. Having seen a lot of the other work that will be on show, I’m sure this will be an absolutely stunning show. If you’re passing through Yorkshire this year, check it out (also worth visiting the beautiful Yorkshire Sculpture Park  while you’re there)!!!

Press Release: Kunsthuis Gallery’s – ‘Our eARTh’

Artists showcase affecting work responding to the Environment and Climate change.

Kunsthuis Gallery presents 100+ selected artists from the UK, Poland, Czech Republic, Ireland, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, USA, Greece, Brazil and Israel.

How are artists, educators, curators and galleries responding to climate change? What forms of art and its mediation are evolving along with our understanding of the crisis? Can art communicate the impacts of climate change and the environment more effectively than facts and figures? Kunsthuis Gallery believes so….

Yorkshire, where our gallery is located, is witnessing the imminent threat of Fracking, a process which should not be underestimated following the toxic and radioactive nightmare seen in the US, Canada and Australia.

Kunsthuis Gallery will curate an exciting exhibition of saleable work in the mediums of photography, ceramics, sculpture, illustration, painting, printmaking, drawing, textiles, glass, collage, digital and jewellery in order to showcase how artists are responding to this growing issue of Climate Change. We will be working with the Howardian Hills organisation (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) who will conduct informative talks at the gallery. We will also be fundraising for our chosen charity Friends of the Earth, the world’s largest environmental campaigning organisation in order to raise awareness with our visitors.

As curators of this show, we believe the arts has a major role and responsibility to encourage and provide knowledge to our audiences towards the environmental sustainability that we need to protect life on our beautiful planet.

We have selected works which inspire us. We want to create a vision to help motivate our audiences actions. We believe the arts are a powerful tool in order to achieve this, by communicating awareness of what is going on around us.

Kunsthuis Gallery is located in Crayke, North Yorkshire set in a 1.6 acre wildlife garden and on the boundaries of the Howardian Hills – an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Due to the nature of our gallery’s location and ethos, we are extremely passionate about this subject. The gallery will showcase our 9 month exhibition in 2018 from 24th March – 23rd December and will donate 5% sales commission to our chosen charity Friends of the Earth, an environmental organisation campaigning for a safer climate.

We invite artists and audiences to share positive stories about climate action, to take steps to provide deeper support for political leaders to legislate change and for us all to go green.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 24th March – 23rd December 2018.

    Kunsthuis is open Wednesday – Sunday, 11am – 4pm.

Exhibition location: Kunsthuis Contemporary Art Gallery at Dutch house, Mill Green Farm, Crayke, York, North Yorkshire, YO61 4TT.

  • Bridget Riley @ David Zwirmer Gallery

Bridget Riley @ David Zwirmer Gallery

I was recently in a cold, wet Central London with a couple of hours to spare. Whilst deciding what to do – desperately trying to find something to distract me from an inevitably expensive trip to either The London Graphics Centre or CassArt Islington – I remembered that this exhibition was currently on, over near the Royal Academy.

After a brisk 20 minute walk, I arrived at the very impressive – and very empty! – David Zwirmer Gallery, 24 Grafton Street, Mayfair (map). Luckily for me, there were only three other people visiting the gallery at the time, so I got to spend some time alone in each room, taking in each piece in silence.

Bridget Riley is know for her simple yet dizzying, visually confusing images. The shape, lines and colours in her work play tricks on the eyes and viewers see movement and colours that don’t exist. The images in this show ranged from small painting on canvas, to large murals filling entire walls. Sitting and staring at the murals – especially the ones consisting of black triangles in the Ground Floor galleries – I found myself trying to readjust my eyes, to catch the fleeting glimpses of diagonal, reds and greens that moved across the periphery of my vision.

I found the dot paintings, with their muted colour palettes less effecting visually, yet still beautiful to look at.

The David Zwirmer Gallery is a beautiful space and if you’re in the area before March 10th 2018, I highly recommend dropping in to take a look around.
